Located in the Mediterranean region in the Kvarner bay, the island of Rab shares natural beauties
with this particular
region. Known as the island of sun, sand, sea and beauty, Rab is famous for its sights of
nature such as Kalifront
peninsula, known for its karst relief. Some other nature sights are the Forest of Dundo with oaks
older than a thousand
years and the Komrčar park.
In the context of cultural and historic sights, the island of Rab has plenty to offer as it was
under the direction of
several administrations throughout its history which dates from the year 350 BC when the first
Illyrians have inhabited
the island.
The Kandarola bay on the island of Rab has been recognized as the starting point of naturalism and
nudism in the
Adriatic. Even Wallis Simpson, the bride of king Edward the VII enjoyed skinny dipping here.
When talking about the traditions on island of Rab, there is just to many events to mention.
Probably the most famous is
the Rabska fjera which brings more than 10 000 tourists every year. During those days (at the end of
July) the streets
of Rab become a stage for a medieval festival.
Fresh fish and seafood, ecologically grown olives, figs, grapes and honey are typical Rab delicacies
likely to be found
on the menu in Rab restaurants, inns and taverns.
Fish stew (brodet), octopus salad, squids, mussels…. are only some of the delicious dishes offered
on Rab. Food is
cooked in traditional ways and served with locally-grown healthy produce from the local gardens.
Rab’s best-known dessert is Rapska torta, a tasty delicacy and the most popular souvenir. It is
believed that it was
served for the first time in 1177 to Pope Alexander III on the occasion of the benediction of The
Assumption of the
Blessed Virgin Mary Cathedral. What is certain is that it was prepared as a specialty during
Venetian rule, more than
three hundred years ago, in the homes of rich Rab patricians. Today Rapska torta is the most
original souvenir from the
island of Rab.
The first and largest medieval summer fair in Croatia, Rabska fjera (25th, 26th, and 27th of July)
is based on tradition
started 21st of July 1364, when the City Council of Rab decided to celebrate and honor King Louis
the Great who freed
them from the Venetian rule, as well as holiday honoring St. Christophor, patron saint of the town
of Rab. Fjera used to
last for 14 days celebrate and praise the saints powers that supposedly saved the town from
destruction.
The entire island goes back in time during those days. Small artisan stores move to the streets, so
you can have your
belt or a perfumed pomade made infront of your eyes, while your hair is being braided with tiny
flowers into a typical
do from the medeival times. Freshly fried šulčići are served and at the beach an entire fishermen
village is built
altogether with the traditional tools, machines and even toys for children. Air is filled with the
song and music, while
tuna, fritule, cheese and wine are served to passers by.
